UFCW Canada and the AWA have joined other community groups to defend and advocate for the rights of migrant workers. This past Sunday April 19, 36 workers were handcuffed, dragged to an airport, and placed on a plane to Thailand; according to lawyer Mac Scott, who is representing a few of the detainees. Many of them will never have the chance to return to Canada. They were arrested with dozens of others on their way to work or while packing food at Cericola Farms, in southwestern Ontario in the biggest raid in Canadian history. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) then lied to them and tricked them into waiving their legal rights. This is a targeted attack by the Tory government against migrant workers. Peter Van Loan, Minister of the Department of Public Safety Canada, can stop these deportations; Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney can grant them status.

The Abbotsford AWA centre in British Columbia will have the privilege of hosting members of the UFCW Canada Youth Program on Sunday April 26, 2009.
Lucy Luna, the coordinator of the Abbotsford AWA centre, will provide a presentation explaining to the group the challenges faced by agriculture workers across Canada, but particularly in B.C.

If you would like to have your students, a group of concerned citizens, or if you personally would like to visit one of our centres, please feel free to contact us to arrange for a visit at:

The AWA and UFCW Canada would like to invite you to a breakfast to hear panel speakers talk about the drastic increase of the use of temporary foreign workers. We will also hear the voices of Temporary Foreign Workers from across Canada and learn about their experiences living and working as migrants.
Following the panel and breakfast we will join hundreds of activists at the “No One is Illegal! May Day of Action.”

Please RSVP Sima Zerehi, at the UFCW Canada National office no later than April 30 as spaces are limited for the breakfast. You can reach her at:

As in the past, the centres will re-open their doors to migrant farm workers toward the end of the first week of May.
This year, the AWA will expand his reach in B.C. by opening another centre in the Surrey area. “The AWA centres have been enormously successful, and enormously busy,” says Stan Raper, UFCW Canada’s coordinator for agriculture worker programs. “Farms workers in so many Canadian communities have come to rely on the assistance our staff can provide them.”

Details of the location of the new centre or any of our other centres can be found on our website at:

We will post details of the centres’ open house/opening ceremonies as soon as they become available in our website (http://awa-ata.ca/en/events/). So keep checking in the upcoming weeks for more information.
