A Leamington cyclist who crashed into a pickup truck and hit his head on a sewer plate two weeks ago has died of his injuries, police said Monday.
The OPP said 56-year-old migrant farm worker Marco Rojas-Torres died on Aug. 23 at Victoria Hospital in London.
Police said hospital staff in Leamington transferred Rojas-Torres to London with serious, life-threatening injuries after he collided with a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado on Aug. 15.
Officers responded to the call about the crash at about 8:45 p.m. Police said Rojas-Torres
had been riding his bike north on the west sidewalk on Erie Street when witnesses said he pulled into the path of the truck.
Police said the Silverado was slowly crossing Erie Street from Foundry Street to Hazelton Street.
According to two witnesses, Rojas-Torres showed signs of impairment and fell off his
bike after hitting the truck.
Police said that's when he hit his head on the metal sewer plate. He was not wearing a helmet.
The 26-year-old driver of the Silverado was not injured, police said.
Police said Rojas-Torres was a migrant farmer from Puebla, Mexico, and had been working in Canada for 12 years. He leaves behind a wife and four children, police said.
Police said the investigation is complete and charges will not be laid.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, police said. Toxicology tests will be done on samples of Rojas-Torres' blood taken the night of the crash.
